FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 13, 2021
The following statement is from Assemblymember Michael Reilly (R-Staten Island) on today’s announcement from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie that the Judiciary Committee’s impeachment investigation into Andrew Cuomo will be suspended…
“It is disheartening to hear that the Assembly Judiciary Committee’s impeachment investigation into Andrew Cuomo’s unethical and potentially illegal conduct will be suspended in light of his resignation. This decision betrays the 11 women who came forward to tell their stories, the tens of thousands of families who lost loved ones in New York nursing homes during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, and millions of New Yorkers who deserve transparency and accountability from their elected officials.
As I’ve stated previously, the Judiciary Committee should complete their full investigation into Cuomo’s conduct and produce their findings in a report. Just as with the report compiled by the Attorney General and independent counsel, the findings of the Assembly Judiciary Committee could prove valuable in any criminal proceedings that may develop as a result of Cuomo’s conduct.
These concerns transcend politics — that’s proven by the consensus held by a majority of members in the State Legislature who believe that failing to complete this investigation fails the millions of New Yorkers we collectively represent.
I urge Speaker Carl Heastie and Judiciary Committee Chair Charles Lavine to reconsider this shortsighted decision.”
