Statement from Assemblymember Reilly on the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 10, 2021

The following statement is from Assemblymember Michael Reilly (R-Staten Island) on the resignation of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo…

“Make no mistake about it – Andrew Cuomo’s resignation as Governor of New York is welcome news, but I implore my colleagues on the Assembly Judiciary Committee to continue with their investigation.  Just as with the Attorney General’s report, which found that Cuomo violated state and federal law in relation to his conduct with women, the findings of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, which is authorized to investigate the wide-ranging series of scandals involving the soon to be former Governor’s abuse of power, could prove vital in any criminal proceedings that may be brought against him.

The fact that Cuomo believes his preemptive resignation will stave off impeachment and/or criminal proceedings should renew our mission for accountability.  The 11 women who came forward to tell their stories deserve it, the families of the more than 15,000 elderly New Yorkers who perished in nursing homes during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic last spring deserve it, and the people of the State of New York deserve it.  Accountability must prevail.”
